Guinea pigs are cute, furry, fun pets. They often 'talk' to anyone willing to listen, and make excellent pets for young children. If trained and cared for properly a guinea-pig can become as loyal as a dog, following their owner around and can even perform basic tricks.

As well good pets, they can also be shown professionally, setting a standard for their breed. There are many different varieties of guinea-pig but they all originate from South America where they can still be found wild, and regarded as a delicacy amongst the locals.

Guinea pigs are neither pigs nor from guinea. The name comes from 'Guyana' in Brazil, and that people often thought they resembled pigs in stature with large heads and bodies in comparison to small legs.
Guinea pigs are also known by the name 'Cavy' from their Latin name Cavia porcellus.
There are 8 different species of guinea-pig, although cavia porcellus is the only one widely kept as a pet.
Guinea pigs cannot make their own Vitamin C and need it to be added into their diet.
Guinea pigs have recently been made more popular due to their appearence in the film 'G-Force'.
